Bike to School Challenge: Middle and High Schools

Bike To SchoolThere’s a few of you in every crowd: the kid with a streak of grease on their pants leg, or the girl with a helmet dangling from her backpack strap. Maybe you’ve been riding to school all winter, or maybe you just rolled the bike out the garage in celebration of spring.

You know what those kids rolling into to school parking lot in their parents’ cars have yet to learn: riding your bike keeps you skinny, your wallet fat, and the planet healthy.

It’s time to stop feeling like the odd one out! Join other students this summer in celebrating Bike Month!

Bike to School Day

If you are new to riding, try participating in Bike to School Day on May 15th! Last year, 24,000 people took to the streets of Seattle on Bike to Work/Bike to School day. Riding to school is easy and fun! Plan your route ahead of time if you’ve never done it before. You can organize a group of friends to ride to school together, and ask your school’s PTA to supply you with prizes or snacks. Make signs or posters, hold a lunchtime safety class, but most importantly, ride and have fun!

The Month-long Challenge!

New this year!
You can register to participate in the Bike to School Challenge on our new website. Become a Team Captain and organize a group of friends to compete as a team, or register as a solo rider. Once you have registered, you can log your miles on the Challenge website. In order to qualify for the competition, you only have to ride to school five times over the course of the entire month. Of course, the more you ride, the higher you rank!

Urban Messenger BagDuring the month of May, you will be able to see how you rank compared to other competitors, and how your school is doing against other schools. At the end of the month, the student who rides the most miles overall wins fame, glory and an Alchemy Goods "Urban" messenger bag made of recycled inner tubes!

The Rules

In order to register, you must be in 6th-12th grade and have a valid email address.

You can only enter trips to and from school, not errands or personal trips taken throughout the day.

You must enter your miles in order to get credit for them! Don’t do all that riding for nothing! If you are on a team, your Team Captain can enter your miles for you or you can enter them yourself. You have until midnight on Wednesday to enter your miles for the previous week. No bike computer? No problem. Use this online tool to see how far you rode.

Raffle Prizes

We will be raffling off lots of cool prizes at the end of the month. You receive one raffle ticket for every five days that you ride.
