"Neither snow nor rain..."

What's more powerful - or at least, resilient - than a barrage of cold temps, wind and downpours? You! Friday's F5 Bike to Work Day was a bona fide success despite a tough weather week. Thanks for joining us by the hundreds at both the City Hall Rally and the after party and for biking by the thousands. (Check out some photos.) A special thanks for those who rose far earlier than 6 a.m. to give out water bottles and smiles at commute stations - 44 in total - throughout the region.

Even with the fierce competition among over 1600 teams in this 2010 Group Health Commute Challenge, it's not hard to step back and see what we're collectively doing. Together as part of the über-team of over 10,000 riders, we're closing in on a million miles biked. As the final week of the challenge rolls on, we're grateful that you're showing coworkers and the greater community that biking can be a convenient, health-savvy and fun way to get around.

Finish strong! Contest is over Sunday, May 30

While we've had our weather challenges this month, the above stats clearly prove that you're out there riding. All good things must come to an end, and the 2010 Group Health Commute Challenge is no exception. The final day of riding is this Sunday, May 30. Riders have until Wednesday, June 2 to post trips and miles for the entire month. Make sure your teammates have logged in their trip data. We will have our tech support team help working to assist you at ghcc@cascadebicycleclub.org.

Bike Month T-shirts

Bicycling never goes out of style and neither does a super-soft American Apparel tee.

Save the date: Group Health Commute Challenge Wrap Party & Awards Celebration
5 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 9
Pyramid Brewery, 1201 First Ave. S., Seattle

Roll in to toast the end of Bike Month and cheer on the beginning of a new and rewarding way of getting to and from work for many people. Join us for music, a beer garden, and a drawing for prizes at this bike-commuter social. Special guests Richard Conlin and Sally Clarke from the Seattle City Council will present some of the awards. Winning and runner-up teams and riders can pick up their certificates at the Cascade booth during the event; winners will also announced on the website by on Monday June 7.

All spoke-card carrying attendees will get a free beer and a chance to win big in our drawing with more than $3000 worth of prizes, including a grand prize Raleigh Detour Deluxe bicycle and several sets of Ortlieb panniers. Must be present to win. Team Captains who missed out on the captains' shirts this year can pick up a red 2010 F5 Bike to Work Day American Apparel shirt at the Cascade booth (while supplies last).

No RSVP to the party is necessary - if you are part of the Group Health Commute Challenge you are officially on the "guest list."

Team Spotlight:
Shoreline's Biking Dolphins

Dubbed the "Biking Dolphins" after their school mascot, Shoreline Community College has three Group Health Commute Challenge teams comprised of faculty, staff, students and administrators. The three teams are labeled by school colors: Biking Dolphins Green, Biking Dolphins Yellow and Biking Dolphins Chartreuse, which though not a school color, is a mix of the two colors and also a very good color to wear to be visible on the road.

The SCC Dolphins welcomed several new bike commuters who had never commuted to work on their bikes before, and these are some of the most enthusiastic and committed team members. The Dolphins also have an active e-communication list, sharing commuting stories, words of wisdom and encouragement, challenges and little triumphs. One team members, Amy Easton, even made fleece headbands and ear covers for all team members, a sorry comment on what one may need to bike in May!

The teams have biked to lunch, out for beers and pizza and to various Bike Month festivities. Three cheers for the three team captains who grew SCC participation from 18 riders on two teams last year to 30 riders on three teams this year: Jonathan Betz-Zall (green team), Emanuela Agosta (yellow team) and Mark Hankins (chartreuse team).
