Bicycle Helmet Donations

Cascade Bicycle Club promotes proper helmet use in the community by donating helmets to low-income individuals, schools, and non-profit groups throughout the Puget Sound area. Apply for helmet donations, through the education director.

Low-cost and free helmets are available from many organizations in King County. Check out the King County Public Health low-cost helmet sales webpage.

Helmet Sales

Cascade Bicycle Club sponsors events where low-priced bicycle helmets and multisport helmets are fit and sold for $10. Most often we do sales and fittings at Seward Park on Bike Saturdays/Sundays from 1 - 4 pm. This year CBCEF is also holding sales at Seattle Community Centers and Children's Hospital. Check Cascade's calendar for dates and details.

Schedule an appointment at our Sandpoint office through the education director.

Bicycle helmets come in sizes xs-xl and a variety of colors. We also sell the popular chrome multi-sport helmets for $10 at all sales.

Helmet Policy and Laws

The city of Seattle and King County require (according to a Public Health Seattle-King County Regulation) that helmets be worn by bicyclists. Bicyclists can be fined $30 for not wearing a helmet, although the fee may be waived if the bicyclist shows proof of having purchased a helmet.

Cascade Bicycle Club requires that helmets be worn by participants in all of our events and rides.

The Cascade Bicycle Club board passed a statement supporting the Seattle Bicycle Helmet Law, passed by Public Health Seattle-King County in July 2003. This new regulation makes Seattle have the same law as the rest of King County already had.

Lighten Up! Bicycle Lights and Helmets On College Campuses

Cascade has arranged for the sale of low-cost bicycle lights and helmets at area college campuses.

The University of Washington's "Lighten Up!" campaign, launched in January '02, sells low-cost light sets on college campuses to students, staff, and faculty. The "Use Your Head" campaign, begun April '01, sells and fits bike helmets.

The University of Washington in Seattle was the first campus to sell our helmets and lights. Student health educators (peer educators) are trained to fit helmets and sell them at the Health Center office. They also raise awareness of bike safety issues by passing out our helmet fit and laws brochures.
