Riding Classes/Clinics

Cascade offers the following classroom and on-bike road riding sessions taught by certified instructors, based on the League of American Bicyclists’ Road I program:

Urban Cycling Techniques I: Intro (4 hours classroom)

Learn to interact positively and confidently with urban traffic and get tips for riding through intersections and negotiating with cars--designed for recreational cyclists or commuters. Workshop covers bicycle traffic laws, lane positioning, riding strategies, basic equipment and maintenance, emergency maneuvers, and safety. Classroom-only session includes discussions of emergency maneuvers and basic maintenance. Take this one now to gain the experience and take the other on-bike sessions later when you have time for them! Bring helmet. Includes handouts.

Basics of Commuting (3 hours):

Want to know more about what it takes to commute by bicycle? Feel like you’re ready to try it, but need a few pointers? Join us for a three-hour bicycle commuting class (some classes include a one-hour optional ride afterward), and learn:

  • safe bicycle operations in traffic (traffic laws, lane positioning)
  • strategies for carrying items (work clothes/work items)
  • riding at night and in foul weather
  • using bike racks on buses
  • minor bicycle repairs
  • route choice

This course offers more commuter-specific topics than Urban Cycling Techniques I: Intro, so if you’re already a commuter or want to start bike commuting, this is the one for you. Bring bike and helmet if you wish to take part in the optional ride following the class. Cost: Refundable deposit of $25 to hold your place.

Check out our commuting page for description of one-hour free seminars
