Group Health Basics of Bicycling

The Group Health Basics of Bicycling is an elementary school PE curriculum for 3rd-5th graders. This hands-on, bicycling skills and safety course is designed to give young students "a foundation of knowledge and skills in traffic-wise bicycling." The 10 to 14 age group suffers from the highest number of bicycle collisions - nearly twice that of any other age group. The Basics of Bicycling teaches children entering this age group to negotiate or avoid those high hazard situations that contribute to this high rate of injury or death.

Sponsored by Group Health, Group Health Community Foundation, and a CDC/Public Health Seattle-King County grant to oversee curriculum, bike maintenance and bike transportation.

Brian Bartlett

Inspirational Speaker and Downhill Mountain Bike Racer (who happens to have one leg)
[email protected]
425.923.4134
Ages: High School, Middle School, or any age
Fee: $250

This Red Bull sponsored athlete is a true inspiration. He has invented his own bionic leg which enables him to compete with able bodies racers. Never before has an amputee been able to jump a bike, let alone stand and pedal. He gives the two legged racers a run for the money. He can come in and talk about racing, show his gear and explain how his leg works.

Fluidride

Trials Bike Demo by Zeb Tingey
www.fluidride.com
206.547.0712
Ages: High School, Middle School, or any age
Fee: $100 for a one man show locally, $150 - $200 for multiply riders

Zeb Tingey manages a Fluidride bike shop here in Seattle. They are a full service shop that also gives instruction to people wanting to take there riding to the next level or just feel more confident on the weekend group ride. He rides Trials mostly for fun but he also likes to compete when he gets a chance.

Observed Trials is a cycling discipline that involves riding your bike through a predetermined section without putting your foot down. There aren’t a lot of competitions locally, so it becomes more of a hobby than a sport. It’s really about having fun, making friends, and setting goals and pushing yourself to learn things you thought you couldn’t do.

The proper use of bicycle helmets would reduce the amount of death, disability and financial loss suffered by thousands of children, teens and adults each year by 80%. Eighty Percent! The BikeKnight program inspires riders to “Wear Their Armor” by making it cool.

Simply, we offer an exciting interactive program featuring real armor that can travel to shopping malls, schools, boys and girls clubs, fairs and any gathering place of families and people who ride bikes. We can attract and maintain a large crowd with our presentations on Medieval Knight's Armor featuring the opportunity to actually handle and "try-on" our chain mail, helmets and body armor pieces. Then, our program links the "cool" factor of our armor to bike helmets, pads, etc. along with the necessity for a "BikeKnight" to maintain their steed (bike). We can bring hundreds of dollars worth of bike repair equipment to share basic bicycle maintenance tips for parents and kids as well while we drive home the point of the necessity of proper bicycle helmet wear.

Our skill with presenting this engaging program is unique and thorough. We have been presenting interactive education programs for over 20 years. See www.InteractiveHistory.net for examples of some of our other programs.
